Havel Market with a Long Tradition
The Havel market has a long tradition. More precisely, this market square in the center of Prague dates back to 1232. The market stalls are today in the Havel street. In the past, the market was even bigger. The market stalls were both in the Havel street and in the knight street (Czech: »Rytířská ulice«) and at the Kohlmarkt (Czech: »Uhelný trh«).
Carlsbad Oblates
A special specialty that you get on the Havel Market are the excellent tasting Karlsbad Oblates. These can be bought in different flavors. In addition, at Easter, you can buy tons of colorful painted eggs on the market. Unlike other wafers, the Karlsbad Oblates are decorated and filled with sweets. Two wafers of about 19 centimeters in diameter are used. As an adhesive in between, a mass of sugar and almond shards is used. In some cases, however, work is also done with other fillings. Karlovy Vary wafers (Czech: »Karlovarské oplatky«) are also obtained with chocolate, for example.
The size of the Karlsbad Oblates has been changed sometimes. Some stalls also offer multi-layer creations. Generally, wafers are actually made like waffles. It uses only water, flour and starch. Because neither protein nor sugar or dough is used, the wafers do not go up, but stay flat. Wafers are baked between two hot iron plates.
